Case I2: Model Smart Home

Complexity
  • Elementary – Medium
Target Level
  • P3 – P6

Objective:
To design and implement a smart home using ideas of IoT.

Description:
To illustrate ideas of IoT, household environment is perhaps the most suitable area of application because it is the closest connection with students as they all live in their homes.

To maximize students’ involvement, a model smart home will be used to simulate the full-scale smart home instead:

Full-scale Model
Household Floor plan on A4 plate
Lighting LED
Air-conditioner 3 V motor fan
Wifi/router/internet Radio communication
Smartphone Micro-processor
Smartphone Micro-processor programming

“Model Smart Home” allows students to involve in details which are inaccessible when in full-scale, in a safe and interesting environment

Hardware
  • Model appliances
  • Floor plan on A4 plate
  • Micro-processor (Home)
  • Micro-processor (Phone)
  • Tablet / Laptop / PC with Internet connection
Software
  • Common programming languages like Make Code / Scratch
Cloud Services
  • N/A
Major Activities
  1. Draw home floor plan
  2. Design IoT elements to be adopted
  3. Design and make model appliances
  4. Connect model appliances to micro-processor (Home) on floor plan
  5. Program micro-processor (Home)
  6. Program micro-processor (Phone)
Learning Objective(s)
  • To know the possibilities offered by IoT
  • To design and build a smart home
  • To handle electrical components such as LED, motor, resistor, etc.
  • To program micro-processors
Duration
  • Theoretical sessions: 10 hours
  • Practical sessions: 10 hours
  • Competition event: 5 hours
Target No. of Students
  • About 20 students per workshop
