VR Game Design

Objective:
To introduce students a basic knowledge of creating VR games, and the principles behind them. A simple game creation will cover the development process of what is involved in building VR games for the main platform (mobile and desktop).

Description:
The school will organise a series of VR game development workshops to students. The workshops offer skills and concepts of game design, such as computer graphics, mathematics logics and development tools. Practical session for applying the knowledge learnt to build their own VR scenes/games/animations. There could be an inter-group appreciation session for students to explore other people's creations.

Hardware
  • VR headsets with/without controllers
  • Smartphone
  • PC / laptop / tablet computer with Internet connection that meet the system requirements of running 3D VR engine
Software
  • Cross-platform development engine that can be used to create 3D VR scene/game design
Major Activities
  1. Theoretical session covering:
    1. Introduction to VR game design and development tools
    2. The principle behind, how VR works with headset
    3. How to code on the supported platform for VR game
    4. Identifying a good scene/game design
  2. Practical sessions covering:
    1. Group project on building their own VR scenes/games/animations x 2
    2. Inter-group appreciation session, learn from each other
  3. Share the challenges and lesson learnt
Learning Objective(s)
  • Introduce students with the principles behind VR and the fields that can be applied to
  • Enhance students' computational thinking and coding skills, through programming their VR scenes
  • Enhance students' narrating/design skills
  • Enhance students' non-technical skills including innovation and collaboration
